Building Blocks supplied the panelized glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) balcony system for the eighteen-story, forty-seven unit condominium. The design required a custom GFRC mix to meet Foster + Partner‘s intended aesthetics. The mix utilized an ultra-white cement with a small amount of quartz to provide just the right sparkle – the perfect Miami mix.
We were challenged to design a GFRC balcony system that captured graceful double curvatures while being both light enough to minimize deflection of the 17 foot cantilevered post-tensioned slab and strong enough to support the glass railing under hurricane conditions. Through close collaboration in a design-assist process with the architects, we were able to arrive at a solution that was beautiful and constructible.
